    A POEM OF REMEMBRANCE

    posted Thursday, 24 April 2008

    LONDON

    Emergency leave

    never ends well

    when a mother

    is lost

    to breast cancer

    I, an Army Lieutenant

    flying back to

    the Sunni Triangle-

a face in the window at

    thirty thousand feet-

    for the final

    six months

    of the tour

    A layover in London.

    The moist weather,

    and a soft couch

    in the dim hotel lobby

    Queen's Gate Garden

    Hyde Park

    I, a lone American.

    Emotions ornate

    as the gates

    I peer through

    at Buckingham Palace

    in the rain,

    seeing nothing.
