My Other Blog

posted Saturday, 8 April 2006
I never thought I'd enjoy blogging so much. Now I have two blogs.

I'd like to introduce you to my other blog, which is currently called "Lieutenant K's Notebook"  (that will change). So far, the site is still a work in progress, but you'll see it being updated more frequently as I get closer to leaving Iraq in the next couple of months, and then much more once I'm home.

There was never any doubt, before or after this war, that I'd continue to pursue a writing career. But I've decided to keep blogging as well. I really enjoy it. When I get home from the war, this new blog will be the place I post all my pictures, write about life after Iraq, my family, and the always fascinating string of moments that make up the adventure I call my life.

So far this other blog contains poetry, short stories, essays, academic essays, press releases and other selected work. These two blogs are linked, just as my experiences here in Iraq will forever color my life hereafter. So I will sometimes link to the new site in this blog, and vice versa.

If you have any ideas for a title for the new blog, I'd love to hear them. I think I'd like to get away from the "Wordsmith" thing. I chose it because it sounded cool, friends called me wordsmith, and it identified me as not only a soldier but a writer. That was important to me when I first created the site. But it's a little presumptuous, and I'm certainly not the first person to use the moniker of wordsmith. I'm trying to come up with something fresh and new for this other blog.

After all, "Wordsmith At War" isn't a very fitting title for a blog written from safely within the United States. I thought about just changing the name of this blog, but I like the idea of something separate, something new and different that will put some distance between my mindset now and my disposition once I'm home.

I'll try and keep you posted when I update it, and of course I'll let you know when I move over to the new blog for good. To see the blog now, you can click here, or the link in the left gutter.

As always, thanks for reading -

Lieutenant K

Transitioning is underway! Congratulations, Lt K, though I have gotten great pleasure in turning to Wordsmith At War. The underlying reason, however, is wonderful for you and I rejoice it has come time for this consideration. Thank-you for this introduction to your new blog.

US Soldier prosecuted by DA for going to Iraq, serving in combat!

Sgt. Jose Estrada, a recently returned (Jan. 2006) Iraq veteran is facing charges that he "wilfully failed to appear" because he went to Iraq to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Estrada was initially charged with domestic violence offenses. The alleged victim in the case came to court and testified three times under oath that the incident did not happen as alleged. There were three witnesses to the crime, two said Estrada did not do it, the third was a six year old girl who would not see where the crime allegedly happened (in the closet of a bedroom). Instead of dismissing the case, the DA persisted.

Sgt. Estrada waited for his day in Court. The DA continued the case on the final date set for trial. Sgt. Estrada was ordered to report to Ft. Lewis Washington for deployment to Iraq. He went and served in Fallujah among other places.

Sgt. Estrada returned and within days contacted the Court and put his case on calender so that he could resolve the matter. The DA was forced to dismiss the domestic violence case because the witnesses left town, but immediately the DA issued charges in a second case for "failing to appear" on the first case.

Sgt. Estrada wants to continue in the military and continue to serve on active duty, but he now has this cloud hanging over his head. Veterans should not be treated like this. If you feel this is wrong, please let you feelings be known. Send an email to Bonnie Dumanis, the district attorney of San Diego:

or call her office at:

Ms. Dumanis is by and large a reasonable prosecutor. Make your voice heard.
